The Worshipful Mayor of Dartford, Councillor Ian Armitt
The Worshipful Mayor of Dartford, Councillor Ian Armitt, the 32nd Mayor of Dartford has lived in Wilmington for twenty-five years and has represented the Ward of Bean & Darenth since his election to the Council in 2003, although his interest in local politics goes back many years when resident in Gravesham.
Councillor Armitt was Mayor of Dartford in 2005/6 and appreciates being only one of four Dartford Borough Councillors to have been accorded the unique honour of holding this position twice.
Councillor Armitt said that during his previous term he became aware of the amount of work the voluntary sector does towards the wellbeing of the residents of the Borough and sincerely hopes that during the coming year hopes to raise the profile of the many unsung heroes and, through his Charity, be in a position to donate much needed funds to some of them.
In his previous term of office Councillor Armitt raised over £32,000 and hopes, with the help of his hard-working Charity Committee and the hopeful support of individuals and businesses, to exceed this figure in the coming year.
The Mayor will be supported by his wife Lynne as Mayoress who is looking forward to what she knows will be a rewarding and interesting year. The Mayoress works part-time as the Finance Officer at Dartford Age Concern.
The new Mayor is a Justice of the Peace; a member of Dartford Parish Council; a Trustee of Dartford Age Concern; Vice President of the Dartford & District Scout Association; a Board Member of Thames Gateway YMCA; Chairman of the Interim Governing Body of Oakfield Primary & Nursery School; Chairman of The Orchard Theatre Board as well as being a members of the Council’s Licensing Committee; Standards Board and Development Control Board.
Councillor Armitt has two daughters, the eldest Nicola is currently living in and hopes to emigrate to Australia whilst Kirsty, his youngest, is studying Costume Design at The Rose Bruford College.
For relaxation Councillor Armitt enjoys the theatre and is an enthusiastic supporter not only of The Orchard Theatre, which he regards as one of the jewels in Dartford’s crown, but also the many amateur groups that exist in the Borough such as DAODS; PAC Theatre; The Pavilion Players and The Platform Players.
