Other types of waste
Clinical and Medical waste
The Council operate a free collection of clinical waste for householders requiring such a service. Yellow plastic sacks are provided and / or "sharps" boxes for disposal of hypodermic needles, and these are collected weekly on a Wednesday.
Requests for this service should be accompanied by a letter from a hospital or doctor.
A similar service is available for nursing homes, surgeries and other commercial premises but a charge is made.
Clinical Waste - Annual standing charge £450.00 (one yellow bag and /or one sharps box), £2.80 per week for each extra sack, £2.20 per week for each extra sharps.
To request the service please telephone 01322 343434.
Hazardous waste
Advice on the safe disposal of potentially hazardous waste can be obtained from Environmental Contracts staff; please contact 01322 343434.
Small quantities of garden or household chemicals can be taken to the KCC Household Waste Centres (see link below). Please see the site staff on arrival, as these items are stored separately.
If dumping of hazardous waste is encountered please contact the Council as soon as possible on 01322 343434, or 0845 634 1212 outside normal working hours.
Commercial waste collection
Commercial premises including shops, offices and industry, are required to make their own arrangements for waste collection, since the service is not included in the Business Rate.
The Council do not offer this service but recognise EnterpriseMRS as its approved Contractor. Properties requiring a commercial waste collection should make arrangements with a suitable licensed Contractor to undertake collections, at their own expense.
The law requires that occupiers of commercial premises make proper arrangements for the safe storage and disposal of their waste (Environmental Protection Act 1990).
It also places a "duty of care" on such persons to ensure their waste is disposed of in a proper manner, and it is important therefore to employ only properly licensed bona fide contractors for such work.
Any business whose waste is found to be dumped, or disposed of illegally, faces the risk of prosecution by the Council and the Environment Agency (maximum fine £20,000) even though they may not have dumped the waste themselves - see Fly Tipping.
