Skaters flock to Central Park to skate new park

The new skatepark has been built in consultation with skaters, who have chosen the design and advised on finishing touches to ensure the park is a first rate facility.

The exclusive party included the chance for the borough’s skaters and professional riders to put the bowl to the test – to the entertainment of a local DJ all afternoon.

Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council says the park is set to be a fantastic venue and it’s fitting that those involved from the beginning will try the park out first.

The input of local skaters and bmx’ers has been essential in the delivery of the park.

They have been involved right from the beginning and it’s great that they are the first to try out their new park as a thank you for all their hard work and support.

We’re committed to developing sport and have already provided the borough with some fantastic sporting facilities, such as the Dartford Dojo and Princes Park, so it was vital to make sure that this would also be a well used, first-rate skatepark,” he said.

The £120,000 skatepark features the latest equipment alongside the skate bowl and plaza. Dartford Borough Council is funding £70,000 with a £50,000 grant from Barclays Spaces for Sport.

Karen Dabner, Dartford Branch Manager for Barclays believes the park is an important feature for the community.

Barclays believes that sport has a key role to play in revitalising our communities, and projects like this one in Dartford are central to this.

We hope that the site will provide an opportunity to participate in and enjoy sport and that it will give a lot of people a lot of pleasure for a long time to come,” she said.

The skatepark design was chosen following a vote by skaters and skateboarders in September 2006.

More than 200 responses were received by the Council with Gravity Engineering Ltd announced as the successful company for the skatepark design and build contract. The final phase of the facility set to be completed by mid March.
